If you've shopped for Ayurvedic products online, you've probably noticed the label is used pretty loosely. “Ayurvedic,” “herbal,” “natural,” “AYUSH approved” — these terms get thrown around on packaging and product pages without much explanation of what any of them actually require.

This matters more than it might seem, because not all of these terms mean the same thing — and some of them aren't even accurate claims a legitimate brand should be making.

What AYUSH actually is

AYUSH stands for Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy — it's the name of the Indian government ministry responsible for regulating these traditional systems of medicine. Products classified as Ayurvedic proprietary medicines require a manufacturing licence issued under this regulatory framework, typically by the relevant State AYUSH licensing authority.

What a manufacturing licence number actually confirms

When you see a licence number — something in the format of a state code followed by digits, like “776-ISM(HR)” — it confirms that:

• The product is classified and licensed as an Ayurvedic proprietary medicine
• The manufacturing facility has gone through the licensing process required to produce it
• The formulation has been registered with the relevant state authority

What it does not automatically mean

This is the part that gets misrepresented most often. A manufacturing licence is not the same as:

• A claim that the Ministry of AYUSH has “approved” or “certified” the product's effectiveness
• A guarantee of specific health outcomes
• Clinical trial validation of the formulation

Legitimate AYUSH-licensed brands should be citing their actual licence number as a manufacturing credential — not implying government endorsement of what the product does. If a product's marketing leans heavily on phrases like “AYUSH approved” or “AYUSH certified safe” without a specific licence number attached, that's worth noticing.

What else is worth checking beyond the licence number

GMP certification — Good Manufacturing Practice certification relates to the facility's quality and hygiene standards during production, separate from the AYUSH licence itself.

ISO certification — indicates the facility follows internationally recognized quality management standards.

Batch testing claims — a facility that states each batch is tested for identity, purity, and physical parameters (rather than just a general “quality checked” claim) is describing an actual, specific quality control process.

Why this matters for you as a buyer

None of this is about being suspicious of Ayurvedic products generally — it's about knowing what a specific claim actually verifies, versus what's just confident-sounding packaging language. A real licence number is checkable. A vague “certified safe” claim is not.
